Udit Narayan is enjoying renewed popularity as his 1997 hit song Duniya Haseeno Ka Mela from Gupt goes viral again. The track gained fresh attention after featuring in the climax of Netflix’s The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
Singer calls the song timeless
In conversation with Hindustan Times, the singer said, “I always believed this song had something timeless about it. Seeing it come alive again after so many years feels very special,” he told us.Elaborating further, he added, “The melody and the lyrics are the biggest reason why this song still connects. It’s amazing to see that the new generation is loving it — it feels like they have discovered this song all over again.”
Fans create reels and dance videos
He stated that it makes him happy to see young people creating reels and dance videos to the song, validating his original instincts. “I feel very happy when I see so many reels being made on this song. People are dancing, lip-syncing, enjoying it in their own way — it shows that good music never gets old,” Udit shared.“Songs like Mere Mehboob Mere Sanam and Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast are also doing very well again. I think it all comes down to melody. That’s what stays, across time and across generations of listeners,” he said.
Recording the iconic track
Udit also called the iconic song a ‘good song for aspiring lovers’. He shared, “When I was recording it, there was so much energy in the studio, and I could feel this song would be special. I didn’t know how big it would get, but I knew it carried something unique.”When Gupt hit theaters in July 1997, its soundtrack was an instant hit. Nearly three decades later, the songs’ continued popularity proves, as Udit says, that “a good melody never dies.”
Director Rajiv Rai reacts to the show
In another interview with Bollywood Hungama, Gupt director Rajiv Rai said, “I went for the premiere and I saw the first episode. But I am very busy with some work. So, I’ll watch it either today or tomorrow. However, I am aware that the song is used in the climax and that it’s woven into the story. I always knew that, but I don’t know the exact storyline.”He added, “I gave it knowingly as they told me that the song forms an important part of the story,” and also said that ever since the show has been released, “a lot of people have reached out to me (to share their feedback and excitement).”
